Getting Around Singapore
Getting around Singapore is the easiest thing to do – public transport is efficient with a huge network of train and buses and if you want comfort, taxis and private hire vehicles are really easy to book. Google maps is usually the recommended way to find the fastest way, but the train and bus timings are a little off. Here is a list of applications that you might want to download before your trip:
Google Maps – Map App that allows you to plan your route to the next destination
Grab – Private Hire Vehicle App with probably the most number of registered vehicles
Gojek – 2nd biggest Private Hire Vehicle App, use this if you want to compare prices
Zig – Taxi App that also allows more alternatives, does allow for meter pricing if that’s your preference
SG Buses – Bus App that showcases the next bus timings for your bus stop
On payment, if you are booking through the taxi or private hire applications, you can link your credit card through the application for a cashless journey. This is the same for public transport, where you can just tap your credit card on the gantry and it will just make the necessary deductions post your journey.
What about cash?
Unfortunately yes, for many places such as hawkers and coffeeshops, they do not accept payment using credit card. There is the other option like QR code payments, but I believe these are typically limited to people who have accounts with the 3 local banks or some of the banks with a bigger local presence.
If you need to change foreign currency, there are money exchanges located all around the place, especially around the town area – so just google the nearest one. The ones with the best rates are usually located at change alley in Raffles Place or near Chinatown – but to be honest, their rates will not be too different from those in other parts of Singapore (except the airport perhaps).
Do not fret though, because cashless is still the preferred option for shopping, cafes and restaurants.
